Waterford FC Under-19 striker Sean Roche looks ahead to the Blues U19 Southern Elite Division opener away to Galway United this Saturday – kick off 2pm in East United Football Club’s grounds.

“I’m really looking forward to the new challenge. It’s a big test for me and one that I’m relishing to be honest with you. I think that the step up to the Under-19 League will be more physical but we’re looking forward to it. I suppose I surprised myself a small bit last season which is a good thing but this year is different.

“When I joined the club first I thought that the short season was tough. I found it hard to get up to the pace and that but I eventually got there. I felt when the long season came around I was ready for it, it was great and I really enjoyed it.

“To win the player of the year was a bonus after the disappointment of losing the semi-final of the National League. I was delighted to get a few goals under my belt last season and hopefully that they will continue coming this year.

“Like every player, the step up to the League of Ireland was a very big test for me at the start but once I got to grasp with it I began to enjoy it. It’s a different challenge this year but we’re just hoping that things go our way and we can be in there challenging come the end of the season.

“We have a long trip to Galway for the first game of the season and we know it won’t be an easy game. It’s probably nice to get a trip like that out of the way early. I think that we’re all looking forward to that game as pre-season has gone well for us.

“It’s our hope that we can pick up the three points in that game. We know that it won’t be easy but we’re working hard and training hard. I think that we’ve a very good squad of players that all want to do well so I’m hoping for a good season.

“I have to say that working with both David Breen and Paul Cashin is great. They are pushing us to our limits in pre-season which is good. It’s great training with them and it’s different to last year. I think that the Under 19s this year will be of a higher quality and I’m really looking forward to it.”
