Waterford FC will get the start of their SSE Airtricity Under 17 League of Ireland Southern Division campaign underway with a Munster derby clash as John Furlong’s side will face Cork City at the RSC this afternoon with the game timed for a 2pm start.
After an impressive pre-season campaign, the Blues will be hoping to hit the ground running against a Cork side that will be bring a wealth of experience to the table and it promises to be a very exciting contest at the South East venue.
One man that’s looking forward to the challenge of this season is Kilkenny native and striker Ciarán Brennan, who said, “It’s great to be with Waterford. We have a very good squad that’s working really hard. I’m enjoying it a lot so far so it’s all good. The two coaches that we have, John Furlong and Gary Hunt, are really good and know their stuff. “I think that we have two of the best coaches in the country and that’s shown in the quality of teams that we have played during the course of pre-season so we just can’t wait for the league to start against Cork City on Saturday.
“Things are going well for me at the moment. I was delighted to be called up to the Republic of Ireland Under 16 squad two weeks ago for the double header against Hungary in Galway and I was happy about how things went for me.
“I know that the club has been in trouble for the last few years and big changes have been made here. I think to have a few of us involved in the International scene with Ireland just further enhances the profile of the club.
“The club is now in a position to attract the best young players from the South-East region and that can only make us all stronger going forward. We have all put in a huge effort for the first game against Cork and we know it’s going to be a big test.
“It’s going to be a very good game against Cork and it’s a Munster Derby as well so we’re all looking forward to the challenge of the season ahead and hopefully we can up near the top of the table come the end of the season,” concluded Brennan.
