Waterford FC return to action this Tuesday with a EA Sports Cup tie against Wexford FC in Ferrycarrig Park.
The Blues left the City Calling Stadium on Saturday in Longford after a 0-0 draw to leave the Blues joint top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division. The Blues missed a first-half penalty before David McDaid saw red in the second half.
Waterford FC faced Wexford FC just last week in the league. The Blues took an early lead through Mark O’Sullivan before he headed past Doyle in the second half to make it 2-0 and ensure the Blues picked up all three points.
Speaking after the Blues picked up a point in Longford, first team assistant coach John Frost said: “It was a game that had everything and we could have been out of sight at half time. We started off in the second half looking like there was going to be only one winner but the sending off came along and changed the game.
“I think in the end that a point was a fair result. It was an excellent first half where the lads looked like that they were really enjoying themselves. The lads are still getting to know each other.”
Blues defender Patrick McClean is looking ahead to a busy week after the scoreless draw with Longford: “In the first half, we came out and that was the best performance of the season to date. We created a lot of chances and unluckily Mark O’Sullivan missed a penalty so we were unlucky not to be in front at the half-time break.
“The second half and down to ten men was tough especially away to Longford. It’s tough to take in the end. We battled hard and got through it in the end. We came for three points tonight but under the circumstances we’re happy with a point.
“We have the League Cup game on Tuesday before the game against Cobh Ramblers at home next weekend. Hopefully it will be a cracking atmosphere again and that we’ll get at it by taken three points.”
Team News: Ian McLoughlin, Tom Smith, Sander Puri and Robin Dempsey miss out, while Jack Lynch, Owen Wall and Tunmise Sobowale are expected to come into contention.
