Waterford FC defender Shane O’Connor returned to St Colman’s Park on Saturday last for the first time since leaving Cobh for the Blues. Speaking to WaterfordFC.ie after the Blues picked up a point to remain top of the First Division table, O’Connor was happy with the performance of his side.

“After the first ten minutes where we needed to settle into the game, I thought that we were excellent and how we didn’t go in with a lead at the half time break is beyond me to be honest with you.

“I think that there was a ghost that kept Marky’s [O’Sullivan] effort that hit the post out in the first half and how it didn’t cross the line, I don’t know. Things just didn’t seem to fall for us in front of goal but on another night, we could have gone in with a lead.

“If we had of got the goal I think we would have held onto it because I thought defensively tonight we were very good as we have been all season. It’s just unfortunate that we didn’t get that goal in front tonight that we probably deserved because it would have settled us right down.

“On a positive note, I thought that we were really good, we played some really good football and on another night, we would have scored a couple of goals.

“I think that the unbeaten run that we’re on at the moment, I think it’s 13 unbeaten after tonight, is great but I think that we have too many draws in there for our liking. We’re still not getting beat and we’re top of the league but we just need to get a couple more wins.

Cleansheets

“The cleansheets that we’re keeping is a fabulous thing for us but I think that we just need to get a few goals that will give us the cushion in games. I think on the bases on tonight and how we played, I think that you can see that the goals will come and if one comes, we can go on and get three or four.

“I think you saw in the first half how well we played. We’re able to mix it up and it’s a fantastic thing in a team so we’re pleased with that. The fans that came down here tonight didn’t get a goal but I hope that they saw what we’re trying to do.

“There is a lot of passion and a lot of drive in this team that we’re trying to do the right things. The main thing now is that we settle a few demons that happened in Athlone on the first day of the season because it’s something that still hurts me a little bit. It has also blemished our record as well so hopefully we can put things right next Friday night.”
