A brilliant performance from Waterford FC’s Under-15 side saw them defeat league leaders Wexford on Sunday afternoon at the RSC.
After the disappointment of defeat the previous week, the Blues showed strength to beat their previously unbeaten near-neighbour league leaders.
The Blues stared brightly but fell behind after just nine minutes. Wexford broke from defence and when the ball dropped to Brian Byrne he made no mistake from close range to give the league leaders the lead.
But the Blues fought back and created numerous chances before finally levelling the game before half time. Donal Porter’s header came back off the crossbar but the defender was on hand to blast home the rebound to make it 1-1.
Wexford had a great chance to go in at half time with the lead but Blues keeper Sean Maher made a brilliant penalty save from Darragh Levingston in first-half stoppage time.
The Blues came out strong and took the lead 13 minutes into the second half. A great Blues move saw the ball swept from right to left, before Ian Byrne got on the end of the cross to make it 2-1.
It was 3-1 with 15 minutes remaining. Kacper Zajal swung in the free kick from the left and Kyle Cuddy was on hand to fire home.
Wexford could have ensured a nervy finish to the game with six minutes remaining, but Evan Farrell’s penalty kick was brilliant saved by Blues second-half keeper Kyle Shelly as the Blues saw out the remainder of the game to collect al three points.
