Dean Walsh becomes the ninth player to be recruited by Waterford FC ahead of the 2018 SSE Airtricity League Premier Division campaign, after the 20 year old put pen to paper on a new deal that will see him make the step up to the top flight for the first time.
Walsh, who netted four times last season, joined the club back in 2015 at Under 19 level before stepping up to League of Ireland in July 2016, making some fantastic contributions from the bench last year in particular.
Speaking on his decision to sign for the season ahead, Walsh said:
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I’m delighted that the club has faith in me to be part of its plans going forward. I’m very happy to commit for 2018 which promises to be a very exciting period for the club.”
The player enjoyed last season despite being largely restricted to cameo roles. The striker reflected:
“It was great to be able to chip in with four goals last season. The support was amazing and being from Waterford, it was brilliant to see the fans really get behind us. To win promotion to the Premier Division was great for everyone but we need to move on now and build on what we’ve started.
“I’m under no illusion that I’ll have to work harder but I’m grateful to get the chance. I have always supported the club and to get the chance to represent it in the top division now is something that really excites me.”
Commenting on his signing, Waterford FC First Team Coach Alan Reynolds said:
“Dean showed a knack for scoring goals in the First Division when called upon and is fully deserving of an opportunity to develop further with the club going forward.
“I’m really pleased that he has decided to stay with us for 2018 season. Dean is another promising local lad who is willing to learn and we see a role for him in the squad as we prepare for the Premier Division.”
