Waterford FC is delighted to announce that midfielder Garry Comerford has committed to the club for the 2018 season, despite strong interest from Cork City and some cross channel clubs. Comerford, who made 25 appearances for the Blues in his first year at the RSC, was a pivotal player in promotion back to the top flight.

The 24-year-old joined the club from Cobh Ramblers at the start of last season and the Laois native is now looking forward to experiencing life in the Premier Division with the Blues.

Speaking on his decision to sign for next season, he said:

“Personally, I think the 2017 season was my best season to date. I am delighted to have played a major part in the club’s promotion to the Premier Division. I am really happy that the management team has shown trust in me to step up to the next level.

“Last season was a fantastic year for the players and the fans. The support we received throughout the campaign home and away was unbelievable. A club with great history, it’s great to see Waterford FC back competing at the top in this country.”

With a number of clubs expressing an interest in the player, off the back of a strong showing in 2017, the robust midfielder is ready for the challenge of tacking the Premier Division in Ireland for the first time. He added:

“I am delighted to re-sign for the 2018 season. I believe the club has great plans for the future and I am looking forward to playing a part in those plans. Waterford FC staff and fans were great to me from the start and made me feel at home. This made my decision to re-sign a lot easier.

“However we can’t dwell on last season’s heroics. We must push on and prove that we can compete at the top level. It’s going to be a massive step-up and I look forward to the challenge. With the squad, the management is putting together I have no doubt we can compete.”

Commenting on Garry’s decision to return for 2018, Waterford FC First Team Coach Alan Reynolds said:

“I’m pleased that Garry has decided to re-sign for us ahead of the Premier Division season. He is a player who developed well as the season progressed in 2017 and he always showed a great attitude on and off the field. I feel that he fitted in very well last season and played a massive role in getting us promoted.

“He was one of the top midfield players in the First Division and a lot of his work went unnoticed. I said before he joined last season that I thought that the fans would like what they saw in Garry and I think that my confidence was borne out.

“I’m delighted that we’re continuing to build a squad that is more than capable of competing in the Premier Division. These are exciting times for us all now as we look forward to the competing in the top division and having Garry on board represents another vital step in our squad building for 2018.”
