Waterford FC are delighted to announce a Tribute to John O’Shea Gala Dinner on Sunday, 11 November in The Woodlands Hotel.

During his fantastic years in the game, John has long been a true Waterford supporter and this is a great opportunity to show appreciation for a fantastic career spent at the highest level of the game by this proud Irishman. We will also have some special guests on the night.

Waterford FC Operations Manager, Tony Burke, said: “We’re thrilled to be celebrating the wonderful career that John has had and continues to have. He’s been a fantastic ambassador for Waterford and to be able to present this night is great for the club.

“John has been a big supporter of the club and fans will remember John at games over the years in the RSC. We’re looking forward a great night at the Woodlands Hotel to hear many stories from John and from different people about his impressive career.”

Described as a “perfect role model” on his recent international retirement, O’Shea will go down as one of the most decorated and successful Irish players of his generation.

118 senior international caps (including being named Senior Player of the Year in 2014), five Premier League winner’s medals, FA Cup, Champions League and much more, John has been a superb ambassador for Waterford city and county.

Playing his underage football with Ferrybank AFC and Bohemians, John joined and made his debut for Manchester United in 1993. Nobody could have predicted the successful career that was to play out with his hard work and determination.

John will ever be remembered for his cheeky nut-meg on Portuguese legend Luis Figo when Real Madrid faced Manchester United in the Champions League and that injury-time equalising goal in Gelsenkirchen in 2014 on his 100th Irish cap.

Versatile O’Shea filled in across the back four, into midfield for Manchester United and even a cameo as a goalkeeper in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur after Edwin van der Sar had been injured.
O’Shea went on to captain the Republic of Ireland senior squad and was described as “one of the most inspirational, committed and admired members of our national teams” by President Michael D Higgins on his retirement.

Tickets are €100 and are limited – contact Tony Burke in the Waterford FC office (or tony.burke@waterfordfc.ie) for details.
