SSE Airtricity League Premier Division

Shelbourne -v- Waterford FC

Saturday, 1st August, 2020

Kick Off: 2pm

Referee: Ben Connolly

Waterford FC return to action this Saturday as the Blues travel to Tolka Park to face Shelbourne.

The sides last faced off back in 2019 in a pre-season friendly where the Blues ran out 3-0 winners against the then First Division side.

The last competitive encounter came back in September 2017 when the Blues entertained the North Dublin club in the RSC as two teams shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

Saturday afternoon’s game will also see the Blues new manager John Sheridan face off against one of his former players in Ian Morris. The Shelbourne boss played under Sheridan during his time with Chesterfield.

The Blues concluded their preparations for the return to action last Friday night in Bray, after matches against Shamrock Rovers II and Tramore previously.

Managers View: Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match against Shelbourne, manager John Sheridan said:

“We’re starting back into things with two tough away games with Shelbourne and Sligo in the space of a few days. I’m under no illusions that these will be tough games, but I fully believe we can get a result out of those games.

“We’ve had a short pre-season, and picked up a few knocks but we’ll be trying to get everyone as fit as they can be and to be as strong as we can be going up to Dublin. Hopefully we’ll be as close to full fitness with everyone as is possible.

“Obviously Ian [Morris] has played under me at Chesterfield in the UK so I’m looking forward to crossing paths with him. He’s a good lad and I have a lot of time for him, but will be hoping to get one over on him. I’ve no doubt he’ll be looking to do the same to us.”

Team News: Michael O’Connor misses the game after picking up a knock in the friendly against Shamrock Rovers II.
