Waterford FC Win 4-2 on Penalties

Waterford FC advanced to the Second Round of the FAI Cup after beating Athlone Town 4-2 on penalties after the sides finished 4-4 after extra time.

Anthony Wordsworth gave the Blues the lead before half time before Shane Griffin doubled the lead eight minutes into the second half. Wordsworth was sent off on 68 mins before Glen McAuley scored from the spot to half the deficit for Athlone Town.

Stephen Meaney levelled for Athlone before another McAuley penalty put Athlone 3-2 in front after 89 minutes. But Greg Halford scored a debut goal in stoppage time to equalise for the Blues; 3-3.

Extra time created little until stoppage time when George Forrest looked to have won the game but for McAuley to score from the restart to force penalties.

Shane Griffin and Cameron Evans scored for the Blues while Garry Comerford and Stephen Meaney did similar for Athlone. Tunmise Sobowale put the Blues 3-2 up in the shootout before Paul Martin saved from Jack Reynolds. John Martin put the Blues 4-2 up and brother Paul brilliant saved once again, this time from Dylan Hand to secure the win.
