Waterford FC -v- Athlone Town
Monday, 2nd May, 2022
Kick-Off: 2pm
Referee: Alan Patchell

Waterford FC return to the RSC on Monday afternoon as the Blues take on Athlone Town in the SSE Airtricity First Division.

The Blues come into the game on the back of a positive 2-0 win over Wexford FC last weekend in Ferrycarrig Park.

Goals from Phoenix Patterson in either half ensured that the Blues took all three points over our Southeast neighbours for the second time this season. Patterson opened the scoring after nine minutes with a superb strike from outside the box, before wrapping up the points 60 minutes later with an excellent free kick.

Visitors Athlone will be looking to get points on the board after their 3-0 defeat at home to Wexford on Friday night.

The sides last met back on the opening day of the season, when the Blues ran out 5-2 winners in the Athlone Town Stadium – goals from Cian Kavanagh, Junior Quitirna, Phoenix Patterson and Louis Britton.

Athlone’s last visit to the RSC came back in 2017 when the Blues ran out comfortable 3-1 winners with David McDaid, Derek Daly and Dean Walsh on the scoresheet.

The Blues currently sit in 4th place in the league on 17 points, while Athlone sit in 9th spot.

From The Dugout: Speaking ahead of Monday’s match against Athlone Town, Assistant Manager Gary Hunt said:

“Last time out we managed to get back to winning ways in Ferrycarrig Park against a tough Wexford side.

“Having been the odd team out on Friday, it’s been 10 days since we played last so it has given us all a chance to put in some good work on the training ground. Everyone has trained well since that and we’re all looking forward to Monday.

“Athlone have found it tough so far this season but are only a few results away from climbing up the table towards the playoff spots, so we need to make sure we deliver a performance that gets us the result.”

Team News: Junior Quitirna and Anthony Wordsworth continue to miss out.
