Waterford FC can confirm the signing of former English Premier League defender Alex Baptiste.

Baptiste, 36, brings a wealth of experience to the Blues as they look to gain promotion from the League of Ireland First Division, with the side currently sat third in the table and Wexford FC the Club’s next opponents.

Most recently, the defender played his football at English Football League side Bolton Wanderers, where he featured 60 times for The Trotters in a two-year spell at the Club.

Baptiste, who played in the Premier League for Blackpool, has played more than 500 games for the likes of Queens Park Rangers, Middlesborough, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End.

Waterford Football Club’s new Chairman and Owner, Andy Pilley added: “We are delighted to make Alex the first signing of the new era at Waterford FC.

“We have a very young and exciting side and feel with the addition of experience we can compete towards the end of the season with the play-offs in mind.

“Alex is a top professional who’s played most of his career in the top two leagues in England, to be able to persuade him to join Waterford is a real signal of intent for us all.

“We are delighted to see Alex join Danny Searle’s squad.”

Baptiste will join up with his new teammates this week and will wear the number 5 shirt at the club, subject to international clearance.

Welcome to the Club, Alex!
