Waterford FC forward Phoenix Patterson has won the September Player of the Month award following his outstanding performance last month.
The award – which was announced by SSE Airtricity and the Soccer Writers Ireland on social media on Thursday ahead of the Club’s FAI Cup semi-final match against Shelbourne on Sunday – has seen Phoenix’s performances and goals be recognised.
The tricky winger saw off Derry City duo Cameron Dummigan and Michael Duffy – who finished second and third respectively – after making five appearance in the month of September, winning three of those and also scoring on three occasions, with free-kick his speciality it seems.
Patterson charmed the footballing world when he found the back of the net with three consecutive goals of brilliance against Bray Wanderers, Dundalk, and Cobh Ramblers. His 16-league goals this season currently have him tied for the First Division’s top goalscorer, while he has added a further two to his name in the cup competition, and he received the award after he was nominated by this newspaper, before it was voted by SWI members.
Despite only arriving in the League of Ireland in July 2021, this month saw Patterson nominated for the prize for the second time.
Congratulation, Phoenix on the award – it was thoroughly deserved!
