Waterford FC defender Alex Baptiste says the Blues won’t get carried away with Friday’s win as they look to seal a place in the Premier Division this Friday against UCD.

Central defender Baptiste has formed an important partnership at the heart of the defence with Kilian Cantwell and proved pivotal to Friday’s 3-0 win against Galway United in Markets Field.

We caught up with Alex to look back on Friday’s win and look to UCD this Friday (TICKETS NOW ON SALE):

Booking a place in the the Play Off Final…

“It’s really good but we can’t really get too excited. We’ve got another game to play. We did well and I think without the ball we were really good. Some great finishes to get the goals and we defended really well to a man, and Paul [Martin] dug us out with the penalty save and then we scored straight away.

“It wasn’t a clear cut 3-0 as you might think but we know we can’t get carried away and need to focus on the next game. We still have a job to do but it’s unbelievable to get through.

Leading 2-0 at half time, did you expect such a tough second half…

“We expected a tough half. They knew if they lost, they were out. We came in at half time and we knew they had nothing to lose and would throw everything forward. We expected those crosses and throw ins and free kicks that were coming from everywhere, but we defended unbelievably to a man.

“We ground it out without playing our best stuff and that’s what you have to do in this tournament-type football as you know. That’s what you’ve got to do and thankfully we did.”

The brilliant away support…

“The fans were amazing; all along the pitchside and in the main stand too. It’s a massive team and club effort and the fans are massively part of this. Next week, it’ll be a massive game again and hopefully they’ll be with us again like they have been this season – and we can get the job done.”
