Waterford FC striker Wassim Aouachria says the Blues feet are firmly grounded after their 3-0 opening weekend win which saw the striker score his first senior career hat-trick.

Two first-half Aouachria goals had the Blues in front at the break before the striker secured the win away to Wexford FC with a third in the second half – his first career senior hat-trick.

“It’s my first senior hat-trick so I’m delighted but more importantly, I’m buzzing for the team.

“I told the gaffer to give me enough time to get the hat trick,” jokes Aouachria, “and I got it; it was a nice goal to get the hat trick. I want to score goals for this club. I got 12 last season and now three in the first game so I’m really happy.

“We wanted to start the season strong and 3-0 was the ideal start, with a clean sheet away from home too which is important. I think this now sets the tempo for the rest of the season.”

Danny Searle’s side started well and raced into a two-goal lead inside the quarter hour, something Aouachria believes will be vital this season.

“Starting well was important, it was maybe something we lacked last season but I think we started well and pressed really well. The goals came naturally and that really set us up for the rest of the game. We knew we had goals and we’re delighted to get the points.”

The season start was the culmination of months of hard work during pre-season – with striker Aouachria admitting the players missed the Blues crowd during the off season.

“We’re delighted to start the league again. We’ve had a busy pre-season but what I missed the most was the fans. Competitive games are what we want and to see the crowd was amazing. There’s a long way to go so we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground and keep working hard. It’s a long season as we saw last year but we’re off to a good start.”
