SSE Airtricity First Division
Athlone Town -v- Waterford FC
Friday, 28th July 2023
Kick-Off: 7.45pm
Referee: Declan Toland

Waterford FC are on the road again this Friday with a trip to face fourth-placed Athlone Town.

The Blues come into the game fresh from their 5-0 Sports Direct FAI Cup First Round win last Saturday.

Ronan Coughlan, Sam Perry, Connor Parsons, Cameron Cresswell and Romeo Akachukwu were all on the scoresheet as the Blues saw off St Michael’s 5-0 in Cooke Park to seal a place in the Second Round.

A week previous saw the Blues’ match with Treaty United postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Our last league tie saw Keith Long’s side play out a 2-2 draw against Longford Town at the RSC.

Home side Athlone Town lost to Premier Division Derry City 3-0 over the weekend in their FAI Cup match; with their last league outing a narrow 1-0 defeat to league leaders Galway United.

The Blues have won both meetings between the sides this season and sit second behind Galway, while Athlone are 4th in the First Division table.

From The Dugout: Speaking ahead of Friday’s match, head coach Keith Long said:

“It was a very professional perfomance [v St Michael’s]. We got ahead in the game and never looked back, scored some good goals and could have got more, and dominated the ball from start to finish. A really comprehensive performance and a good win.

“We’re looking forward to getting back into league action on Friday. It’s a big game for us. Athlone are going well in the league so it’ll be a good test. We’ve got to make sure we’re prepared because this is another big game for us.”

Team News: Darragh Power and Dean McMenamy miss out through injury. Giles Phillips is suspended.
