Waterford FC are thrilled to announce the signing of Robbie McCourt for the 2024 League of Ireland season.
The 25-year old joins the Blues from Dundalk FC, after spending the last season-and-a-half with the Lilywhites.
Robbie returns to the club after a two-year spell away from the club. He was part of the 2020 Premier Division squad in a season that was hampered due to the coronavirus pandemic. Robbie played every minute of the 2020-campaign, as the Blues finished in 5th place with 24 points from 18-games.
Robbie brings a wealth of Premier Division experience to the Blues, having already played in the top-flight of Irish Football with Dundalk, Sligo Rovers & Bohemians – where he played under the guidance of Keith Long for 18-months.
Speaking to WaterfordFC.ie after signing, Robbie said:
“I’m buzzing to be back. It took a few weeks to get done, but I’m excited to get going for next season now.
“I know Keith quite well. I played under him for a couple of seasons at Bohs; he’s the manager who gave me my first-team debut. I know him well and he knows me well, so I know what’s to come from him.
“We had a few good nights in 2020 at the RSC before covid hit. It was unfortunate that I didn’t get to play in-front of the fans as much as I wanted, but like I said we had a few good nights and the fans are always bouncing, so I’m excited to get going again playing in-front of them in the Premier Division.
“It was difficult playing through covid with no fans in the ground. No player wants to play with no fans, so I’m buzzing to be able to do that now next season. The Waterford fans are some of the best in the league.”
Speaking on Robbie McCourt’s signing, Head Coach Keith Long said:
”We’re delighted to welcome Robbie to the club for his second spell.
“He did well in his first spell at the club so we’re hoping for a similar type of impact this coming season in the Premier Division.
“Robbie gives us good options in terms of positions as he’s a very versatile player; he can play centre back, left back and can also play as a defensive midfielder so it’s important we have that skillset.
“He’s at a good age, has lots of experience and knows what it’s like to play in this league, so we’re looking forward to welcoming Robbie back to Waterford.”
