Fixture: Waterford FC vs Derry City FC

Competition: SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division

Date: Friday 26th April 2024

Venue: RSC

Kick-off: 7:45pm

WATERFORD FC

The Blues come into the game on Friday on the back of picking up five points from their last three games. A 1-0 win against Bohemians in Dalymount Park at the beginning of this month was followed up with a 0-0 draw against Galway United in our most recent home game, before Keith Long’s side picked up a valuable point on the road in Inchicore last Friday against St. Patrick’s Athletic in a 1-1 draw.

Maleace Asamoah netted his third of the season, opening the scoring in the 13th-minute – flicking home from close range from Ben McCormack’s corner – before the hosts levelled mid-way through the second-half through Brandon Kavanagh.

Three unbeaten on the bounce now, the Blues currently occupy eighth place in the league table after eleven games – sitting on thirteen points.

DERRY CITY FC

The Candystripes make the journey to Waterford this Friday on the back of an impressive three-one win over St. Patrick’s Athletic on Monday evening at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. Danny Mullen & Patrick Hoban had Derry two-nil up, before Conor Keeley pulled one back for the Saints. Mullen restored his sides two-goal lead soon after to secure all three points for Ruaidhrí Higgins’ side.

The Candystripes have had a mixed start to their 2024 Premier Division campaign. Despite sitting in third, they have won five of their opening twelve games – drawing four. They currently sit on 19 points – level on points with Shamrock Rovers in second and three behind league leaders Shelbourne.

Team News:

Kacper Skwierczynski misses the game through injury (Hip). Connor Evans & Maleace Asamoah are doubts for the game. Ryan Burke returns to the squad after serving his one-game suspension.

Keith Long’s Thoughts:

“A big performance is required on Friday against Derry. Obviously they’re at the top end of the table challenging, so we know the task ahead of us. They’re a good side with really good players. They beat us already up in the Brandywell this year back in March. But we’re at home, and in reasonable form, we want to try and build on the performances so far – turn draws into wins – and there’s no better place to start doing that than in the RSC.

It’s so important for the supporters to get behind the team. We know we’re up against it against Derry, so we want to perform well. The boys are un good spirits and have worked really hard this week, and we’ve prepared well for the game. So hopefully we can translate what’s been on the training ground to the pitch and perform against a top side”.
