Fixture: Sligo Rovers FC vs Waterford FC

Competition: SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division

Date: Saturday 31st August 2024

Venue: The Showgrounds

Kick-off: 7:45pm

WATERFORD FC

The Blues will look to bounce back from last week’s narrow 1-0 defeat to league leaders Derry City FC at the RSC with a result away to Sligo Rovers this Saturday at the Showgrounds.

A second-half strike proved the difference between the Blues & Derry last Friday in-front of a crowd of almost 3,000 spectators at the RSC.

The Blues secured all three points in their last visit to Saturday’s venue back in May, when Christie Pattisson’s 46th minute volley decided the game as Keith Long’s men picked up an important three points.

Waterford sit in third spot in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division table with 40 points to their name after 28 games, as they enter the final round of fixtures for the 2024 campaign.

SLIGO ROVERS FC

John Russell’s side suffered a surprised 7-0 thrashing away to Drogheda United FC last Friday at Weavers Park, as the Bit o’Red will look to turn things right against the Blues this Saturday.

Prior to last week, Sligo suffered a shock exit from this years Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup – losing two-nil to First Division outfit UCD AFC at the Showgrounds.

Sitting on fourth place in the league table – level on points with Waterford with the same games played – John Russell’s squad will look to turn their recent form around this Saturday.

WATERFORD FC TEAM NEWS

Kacper Skwierczynski (Illness), Niall O’Keeffe (Ankle) & Kyle White (Hamstring) all miss out on Saturday’s trip to the Showgrounds.

Sam Sargeant returned to light training this week & is making steady progress.

KEITH LONG’S THOUGHTS

“I thought we did a lot of good things last week against Derry City – by and large we played well. Sligo Rovers on Saturday will be a difficult game, but we’re looking to put in a good performance & build on plenty of positive aspects from our play last week.”
