Waterford FC can confirm that assistant manager Matt Lawlor has returned to Fleetwood Town FC following the conclusion of the 2024 League of Ireland Premier Division season.

Lawlor made the move across the Irish Sea back in April, after striking up a strong rapport with Blues Head Coach Keith Long.

After playing an important role in the Fleetwood Town academy, Lawlor tested his skills in senior football for the first-time at the RSC and made an immediate impact, becoming a fan favourite with his impressive coaching style & wealth of knowledge.

Lawlor gave huge time outside of his first-team duties to the club, working closely with our academy department, along with regularly appearing at various community events that took place throughout Waterford with our Waterford FC in the Community team.

Speaking to waterfordfc.ie, Matt was grateful of his experience in Ireland with the Blues and wishes the side well for the future, commenting:

“My time at Waterford FC was nothing short of amazing, I have become a huge fan of the club, area and country due to my experience this season. It meant a huge amount to me and my family. The chats in and around the town, the warm nature of the people of Waterford and the pride you all have for your city/county are something that I loved about this past season.

The supporters, both home and away, have been such a huge help and reason we had the season we did, and I cannot emphasise the part that plays in the squads’ performances so thank you for that. I will be returning as a supporter next season to see Keith, the staff and team. Thank you for everything.”

Waterford FC Head Coach Keith Long thanked Matt for his dedication while at the club, and wished him well for his future back at Fleetwood Town:

“Matt was brilliant from day-one at the club. An excellent coach, who immersed himself in his work and gave everything to Waterford FC during his time here. Matt is a great person as well as a coach, who will be badly missed by all at the club.

I wish him, his partner Becky & their son Max the very best for the future.”

Best of luck Matt, and we look forward to seeing you back at the RSC again!
