Waterford FC vs Drogheda United FC

SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division

WATERFORD FC

The Blues welcome Drogheda United to the RSC on Friday evening looking to pick up an important win against Kevin Doherty’s side, as we enter the final four rounds of fixtures of the 2025 Premier Division season.

A 2-1 defeat away to Shelbourne FC last week saw John Coleman & Danny Ventre depart the club, with Matt Lawlor & Mark Yeates announced as the Blues’ Interim Head Coach & Assistant Coach for the remainder of the campaign, starting tomorrow night against the Louth outfit.

Lawlor has previously been on Interim Head Coach duties for the Blues earlier this year, picking up three wins from four games in charge (Wins away to Bohemians & Shelbourne, and a 2-1 win at home to Derry City), as he will look to repeat that fate over the next month.

Waterford sit in ninth position in the league table going into Friday night’s fixture, level on points with Galway United on 34 each.

DROGHEDA UNITED FC

Kevin Doherty’s men travel down to the RSC on Friday looking to maintain their recent run of form that has seen them unbeaten in their last 4 games (1 win, 3 draws) – most recently picking up a 1-1 draw at home to Derry City FC last Friday at Sullivan & Lambe Park.

Drogheda have maintained an unbeaten record against the Blues so far in 2025, picking up a win along with two draws against Waterford in our three games against each other so far this campaign.

Drogs go into the game sitting in fourth position in the league table, with 47 points secured from their 32 games played.

TEAM NEWS

Sam Glenfield misses out Friday’s game due to suspension after accumulating 10 yellow cards. Matt Lawlor will assess players ahead of kick-off, with some players picking up knocks in training this week.

MATT LAWLOR’S THOUGHTS

“I want this club to do really well, and obviously that hasn’t been the case on the pitch so I’ve been asked to come back until the end of the season. That’s all I’m here to do, to try and help the team through these four games and go as well as we can.

I wish I wasn’t here because that means Waterford FC is doing well, and that’s all I want as a fan. It’s bitterweet really, although it is a different scenario coming back in which four games left.

Drogheda are a very good team who in the last 18 months have been playing impressively. They’re a very tough and physical side with good keey individuals like Ryan Brennan, Shane Farrell, Darragh Markey & Fuhad Kareem, along with Conor Keeley at the back.”
