Earlier this month, our Down Syndrome side were named as this years League of Ireland Cairdeas Championship Cup Champions after an excellent display in FAI HQ in Dublin.
The Blues were paired alongside fellow League of Ireland sides St. Patrick’s Athletic, Drogheda United, Shelbourne, Sligo Rovers & Bray Wanderers in group B, were they impressively ended the group top of the table to be crowned as this years Cairdeas Cup Championship winners.
Captain Sean Toolin lead the team in exemplary fashion on the day, scoring an incredible 17 goals across the competition, with John Flynn, Zak O’Dwyer & Gary Treen all getting their names on the scoresheet on the day to give us a real attacking threat throughout the game.
In defence, our number 1 John Mulligan provided a stern test for all opposition to try and beat, with Paul Corcoran, Paul Eaton & Wayne Pepper all showcasing their ability emphatically on the day, as the Blues earned their first piece of silverware as a team.
Waterford FC Head of Community Development Colin Power was delighted for the group after putting in such a dedicated effort in training this year, commenting:
“It was brilliant to see the lads lift the Championship Cup in Abbottstown. The improvements since we played up there earlier in the year were significant, and that’s all down to their hard work every week in SETU Arena.
It’s also important to recognise the commitment of Dylan, Sandra & Amy who are there for the sessions every week and enjoyed the win as much as the team did. The lads are a pleasure to work with, and we are all looking forward to continuing the Futsal journey in 2026.”
