Waterford FC are delighted to announce the re-signing of Meadhbh Doherty ahead of the 2026 League of Ireland season.
The 17 year-old central defender had an impressive breakout season in senior football last year, becoming a regular for Gary Hunt’s side during the second-half of last season.
Doherty heads into her third season as a Blue, having joined our WU17s from schoolgirl side Evergreen FC in Kilkenny.
Meadhbh’s ability was quickly recognised, being called into our WU19 side at 16 years of age, before making her senior debut against Bohemian FC at the RSC last August.
The central defender earned a starting spot for the Blues in each of our final six games of the 2025 season, scoring her first senior goal for the club in our dramatic 3-2 final day win at the RSC against Treaty United last October.
A tough tackling defender who is also comfortable playing in midfield, Doherty is a welcome addition to our 2026 squad ahead of the start of our season against Wexford on 14th March.
Blues Head Coach Gary Hunt is delighted to welcome back Doherty, mentioning:
“Part of our plan to bring through a senior team was to give opportunities to our talented young players in our academy and Meadhbh ticks all those boxes.
When Meadhbh came into the first-team at the tail end of last season, she showed a level of readiness for senior football while still under 17 and now I am excited to help her continue to grow and develop for 2026.
Meadhbh will give us versatility around numerous positions on the pitch while also remembering she is still learning the game, we must work closely with her and the other young players to improve their game.”
Welcome back, Meadhbh!
