MATCH REPORT: Waterford FC 0-2 St. Patrick’s Athletic FC

By Neil Madigan

Waterford FC returned to action against St Patrick’s Athletic looking to halt a dip in form and rediscover momentum. Recent results have tested confidence, but there is renewed hope among the Blues faithful that a strong, disciplined performance could spark a response and get their campaign firmly back on track. The visitors arrived in great form, sitting second in the league, hoping to close the gap on leaders Bohemians.

The contest began in a cautious fashion, with the visitors controlling possession in the opening stages. The home side sat deep and stayed compact, limiting chances as the game settled into a steady early rhythm. Daly’s side showed strong defensive organisation, maintaining a compact shape that limited St Patrick’s Athletic to few clear chances early on. Their disciplined positioning and willingness to break quickly provided a useful outlet, which relieved any early pressure and kept the opposition cautious.

The first major chance of the game looked to be the one to count for the Inchicore outfit. Stephen Kenny’s side’s goal came in scrappy fashion, as a dangerous ball into the box caused confusion in the Waterford defence and was inadvertently turned into his own net by Hayden Cann. Under pressure, the defender could only divert it past his own goalkeeper, handing St. Pat’s the lead in unfortunate circumstances.

After taking the lead, St Patrick’s Athletic dominated midfield with composed, short passing and smart positional rotations, effectively controlling the tempo. They pressed the Blues high when out of possession, forcing errors and keeping the home side pinned deep, which allowed St Pat’s to dictate play and build attacks patiently.

With Daly’s side pinned back, they continued to resist and tried to find an opening of their own before the conclusion of the half. As the half time whistle blew, the Blues were still well and truly in the game but faced an uphill battle to break down this fluid Pats’ side.

The Blues came out of the break brightly, pressing higher and creating early openings in St Pats’ defence, including a promising chance for Luke Heeney that was unlucky only to find the side. Their sharper movement and quick transitions signaled intent to seize control and push for an equaliser.

As the half grew on past the hour mark, the visitors started to find their feet again as substitute Aidan Keena saw his deadly strike narrowly wide of the far post. Keena’s impact continued to be evident as his threat ultimately led to St Pat’s second of the night. A breaking ball fell to Keena, who saw his goalward effort nodded home by the arriving Luke Turner.

The Blues looked deflated after St. Pats doubled their lead, struggling to mount any meaningful comeback as the game wound down. As the final whistle sounded, there was a sense of sheer disappointment as the Blues side faced defeat. Waterford focus will now turn to Shamrock Rovers, who they host after the international break.
