Waterford FC is delighted to announce the signing of Aaron Simpson. The 22-year-old defender joins the club on a permanent deal until the end of the season.

Simpson began his career at Maidstone United before signing a two-year deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 2015 as a 17-year-old after impressing helping Maidstone to the top of the Ryman Premier Division and the second round of the FA Cup.

With chances limited, Simpson spent time on loan including with Portsmouth and Kilmarnock. Simpson’s most recent football was played on loan with FC Jumilla.

Speaking to WaterfordFC.ie, Simpson, who’s trained with the Blues squad for the last two weeks, spoke of his delight at signing on the dotted line:

“I’ve been training for the last two weeks so it’s great to get signed up now. I’ve enjoyed the training so far and I’m looking forward to playing some games now. I’ve settled in really quickly and that’s made it all easier for me, and Alan [Reynolds] and the coaches have been great to me since I’ve come in.

“I haven’t played much recently but I’ve been training really hard, first with Joe [Gamble] and I feel fit and everybody just wants to play games.

“I was a bit sceptical coming over, of course, I’d never even been in Ireland, but once I got here and saw the professionalism of how things are run, the lads and the staff were great and I got a good vibe from it here and that’s why I wanted to stay.

“Coming to Ireland, I wasn’t really too sure about what the standard would be and that but we’ve got great players here, a really good mixture with some really experienced guys and a lot of good young players too and I can’t wait to learn from the likes of Damien [Delaney] and I think we can do really well this season.”

Speaking to WaterfordFC.ie after completing the signing, manager Alan Reynolds said: “We’re really happy to get Aaron in and sorted. He’s been in around the squad for the last few weeks, working on his fitness with Joe and being in around the lads too and he’s done well.

“He signed for Wolves as a 17-year-old so he’s got something about him. He’s a natural right back, he’s big and strong and gives us another option in that position.”

Simpson is awaiting international clearance before being available for selection.
