MATCH REPORT: Waterford FC 4-0 Sligo Rovers FC

Padraig Amond rolled back the years with a superb hat-trick as bottom side Waterford FC powered to an emphatic 4-0 victory over second-from-bottom Sligo Rovers at the RSC, slashing the gap between the sides to five points and breathing fresh life into their survival hopes.

Played in bright conditions on an immaculate surface, the opening stages suggested a tight contest. Sligo began with intent and forced a couple of early corners, but Waterford quickly settled, showing fluency and purpose as they began to assert themselves.

Luke Heeney was central to the hosts’ early attacking play. The winger provided a constant threat down the right and fashioned the first clear chance after six minutes, delivering a precise cross for Benny Couto, whose header was well saved by Sam Sargeant. Heeney remained influential, linking neatly with Dean McMenamy and seeing another effort deflected behind, while also having a penalty appeal waved away.

Waterford’s persistence was rewarded on 26 minutes with a well-worked opening goal. Will Johnson did well to win possession in midfield before combining cleverly with Couto. The move gathered pace as Jordan Houston delivered from the right, and Amond showed his class with an excellent first touch before finishing confidently past Sargeant.

That goal gave Waterford control, and they looked increasingly comfortable as the half progressed. They nearly doubled their lead before the interval when Hayden Cann rose to meet a Couto corner, only to see his header drift narrowly wide. Sligo, meanwhile, struggled to create clear openings and were limited to sporadic efforts.

The visitors showed signs of improvement after the restart. Alex Nolan tested Stephen McMullan with a well-struck effort on 56 minutes, while Sargeant was called into action at the other end, producing a fine save to deny Couto from distance as the game opened up.

The defining spell came midway through the second half as Waterford took full command. Tommy Lonergan was fouled on the left, leading to a booking for Oliver Denham, and from the resulting phases substitute Jorgen Voilas made an immediate impact. Introduced moments earlier, he reacted quickest to a long throw from Houston that was flicked into his path, finishing neatly on 67 minutes.

Sligo’s challenge soon unravelled further when Denham was sent off for pulling back Voilas as he threatened to break clear. Reduced to ten men, the visitors struggled to cope with Waterford’s momentum.

Amond then took centre stage, adding two goals in quick succession to complete a memorable hat-trick. On 72 minutes, he finished calmly following excellent interplay involving Voilas, Couto and Conan Noonan. Just two minutes later, he struck again, timing his run perfectly to meet a precise pass from Voilas before firing beyond Sargeant.

With the result beyond doubt, Waterford dominated the closing stages, seeing out the game with ease to secure a comprehensive and deserved victory. It was a performance built on energy, cohesion and clinical finishing, with Amond’s contribution a timely reminder of his enduring quality.
