Waterford FC’s final pre-season match in Dubai against sister club Fleetwood United was abandoned after 41 minutes due to a waterlogged pitch.

You heard that right, due to heavy rain and a thunderstorm in the area, the match at The Sevens Stadium was abandoned.

Despite trying to keep the game flowing, the referee blew his whistle with five minutes left in the first half. With it being a pre-season match between two sister clubs, and with players’ safety at risk, the decision was made to call the match off.

The Blues did find themselves one goal up thanks to Wassim Aouachria’s spot-kick on 19 minutes after Shane Griffin was fouled inside the penalty area.

Waterford FC would like to thank Fleetwood United for their hospitality for the whole tour.

Hopefully next time the two teams meet, it will be in very different circumstances.
