Three of our academy sides were in action over the weekend just gone across Saturday & Sunday – check out how they got on down below!

SATURDAY

WU17: Waterford FC 1-1 Cork City FC

Our Women’s U17 side were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Cork City FC on Saturday afternoon in their WU17 League of Ireland Academy Tier One clash.

The visitors took the lead on 57 minutes when Phoebe O’Shea opened the scoring, before Kate Tomkins netted deserved equaliser for the Blues just sixty seconds later to get Trevor Casey’s side back into the game.

Both sides pressed for a winner late on, as both squads had to settle for a share of the points at SETU Arena.

This point leaves the Blues in fifth place of their Tier One campaign, picking up a point in each of their opening two games.

MU15: Mayo FC 1-6 Waterford FC

Our Men’s U15 side made the long journey to Castlebar to take on Mayo FC in their Michael Hayes Cup first round clash, as they progressed into the second-round with a comprehensive six-one victory at Umbro Milebush Park.

The hosts opened the scoring after 13 minute, before the Blues took control of the game scoring twice in ten minutes leading up to half-time through Bobby Keohan & Daire Cummins.

Second-half goals from Orion Cala, Callum Slattery, Ivan Voloshyn & Conor Dempsey saw the Blues earn their place in the next round of the prestigious competition.

SUNDAY

MU17: Cork City FC 2-2 (1-3 on pens) Waterford FC

Our Men’s U17 side played a cup classic away to Cork City in Bishopstown on Sunday afternoon, as they defeated their Munster Rivals 3-1 on penalties after 120 minutes of gruelling action, to progress into the second round of this years Mark Farren Cup.

Noah O’Brien opened the scoring for the Blues after 16 minutes, before the hosts levelled the scoring ten minutes into the second-half.

Shane O’Sullivan looked to have won it for the Blues after 87 minutes, only for Denzell Obenge to bring the tie to extra time in the 12th minute of injury time.

Neither side could be separated in extra-time, before the Blues progressed into the next round with a three-one penalty shootout win thanks to goals from Shane O’Sullivan, Mason Murphy & Jan Wozniak. Keeper Igor Bacela was the hero of the day for the Blues, saving twice in the shootout to earn the win for the young Blues.
