Second-half substitute Sam Glenfield popped up with his second stunning finish of the season to give Waterford a deserved share of the spoils to deny Bohemians all three points in our final in their SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division meeting of the season at the RSC on Friday night.

With former Bohs boss and Blues Head Coach Keith Long having the better of the previous three meetings, it looked as if his side were going to go down to a fine James Clarke header nine minutes from time, but for a second time this season against Bohs, Glenfield came up with a cracking goal.

The game was less than two minutes old when the home side had a big chance to strike the front as a ball into the penalty area broke nicely for Kacper Radkowski on the left-side, but his low left-footed shot was well saved by James Talbot at his near post.

Dayle Rooney whipped in a dangerous right-wing corner on ten minutes that evaded everyone inside the area before Connor Parsons found space for himself out on the left seven minutes later that saw the winger cut into the area onto his right-foot, but he sliced a right-footed shot wide of Talbot’s far post.

Waterford’s best moment in the game to this point arrived on 39 minutes. Barry Baggley swung in a right-wing corner that was met on the volley by Padraig Amond, but his effort was cleared off the line before the ball eventually ended up at the feet of Christie Pattisson only for his goalbound effort to be blocked away.

Parsons broke from midfield on 43 minutes to race into the penalty area from the left, but he fired a left-footed shot wide of the far post.

It was the winger that created the first chance of the second-half within seconds when he once again cut in from the left, but his effort just went wide of the near post as the home side tried to get their noses in front.

A good opportunity fell the way of Christie Pattisson on 55 minutes when Ryan Burke swung in a left-wing cross that was punched clear by James Talbot into the path of the attacker, but his first-time shot went wide of the left-hand post.

Waterford continued to press for the opener with Padraig Amond laying a neat ball into the path of Ben McCormack two minutes later on the top of the penalty area, but he failed to hit the target as his left-footed shot flew over the crossbar of keeper Talbot.

Blues keeper Sam Sargeant was called into action to make a fine save to deny the visitors the breakthrough on 75 minutes when substitute Adam McDonnell raced clear on goal from the left, but his well-struck shot was well kept out by the netminder.

The breakthrough goal came six minutes later. Dawson Devoy sent over a left-wing free-kick that found the head of James Clarke unmarked inside the area, and he powered a header to the near corner past a helpless Sam Sargeant

But time ticked into the third-minute of added time, Glenfield scored a brilliant equalising goal when the Fleetwood Town loanee let fly with a half-volley that flew past the helpless James Talbot to send the Waterford faithful into raptures.

The same player went close to winning the contest for his side seconds later when he took a pass from Sam Bellis in the centre of the penalty area, but his left-footed strike was brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by keeper James Talbot with Darragh Power heading the resulting corner-kick over the top.

The final whistle sounded from referee Damien MacCraith before the keeper could kick out the ball to restart play and now the Blues will prepare for their final game on Friday evening when they take on Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium with a seventh placed finish banked in their Premier return.
