Waterford FC are delighted to announce that Danielle Griffin will lead the Blues’ Women’s side as our Captain for the 2025 SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division campaign.

Head Coach Gary Hunt has named the Blues academy graduate as our captain for 2025 – becoming the first-ever player to be named as captain of a Waterford FC senior women’s side – ahead of our league opener away to Treaty United FC at the Markets Field this Saturday (3pm).

The defender started her footballing journey locally in Waterford with Ferrybank AFC & Bohemians FC Waterford, before joining the Wexford FC Women’s academy in 2020 where she spent time with their WU17s & WU19s.

After impressing with the Ferrycarrig side, Danielle made the move to Waterford FC in 2023, where she has spent the last two years with our WU19s.

The tenacious defender was rewarded with her impressive development with a spot in Gary Hunt’s side for 2025 at the start of January, as she is now named captain for our inaugural season in senior women’s League of Ireland football.

Maeve Williams has been named vice-captain of Hunt’s side for 2025, with the goalkeeper & Griffin ready to lead our side into action this coming weekend

Blues Head Coach Gary Hunt was delighted to announce Griffin as captain & Williams as vice-captain for the coming year, commenting:

“Danielle has shown since day one that she possesses the qualities to lead this new group. I’ve been impressed with the standards she sets herself and leads through her actions alongside how she guides and encourages the rest of the squad.

She has great respect around the group and is definitely a brilliant role model for any young player to aspire towards.

Having known Danielle and her family for a long time, I know she will take great pride in this and work hard to make sure she gives her all which in turn will make Waterford a better team on & and off the pitch.

Maeve is someone who is motivated massively to play for this club and I have seen first hand how much it means to her through conversations since day 1.

I know Maeve will help raise the standards in this group and alongside Danielle and others they will embody what is expected every time they put on that blue shirt.”

Danielle spoke of the honour in receiving the armband for 2025, mentioning:

“I’m delighted to be named as Captain, it’s something I’m very proud of. I’m thankful to Gary for having faith in me and it’s an honour to lead Waterford FC’s first ever Women’s Senior League of Ireland team under his management. I’ll continue to look out for all the girls and will lead by example both on and off the pitch for the coming season.”

Congratulations, Danielle!
