Saturday 10th May 2025

Athlone Town Stadium

7:30pm

WATERFORD FC

Gary Hunt’s side fell to a 2-0 defeat away to south-east rivals Wexford FC last weekend in our first derby clash of the season. Goals either side of half-time saw the Blues narrowly fall to defeat, despite a positive performance away from home.

The Girls in Blue will be looking to return to winning ways after already picking up two wins to their name earlier this season against Sligo Rovers FC (2-0) & DLR Waves FC (4-2).

Waterford sit in ninth position in the league table on six points from six games going into Saturday’s clash against Athlone.

ATHLONE TOWN AFC

The league leaders welcome to the Blues to the Athlone Town Stadium on Saturday looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2025 Women’s Premie Division season.

Last Saturday saw Athlone pick up an impressive 3-0 win away to Galway United FC live on TG4, with Shauna Brennan, Isabel Ryan & Madison Gibson netting for Colin Fortune’s side.

Athlone sit at the top of the league table, with six wins and one draw to their name from their opening seven games.

TEAM NEWS

Injured players are working hard and are a week closer to a return while Lauren Egbuloniu remains the only long term absence. A few knocks in the squad during the week but Gray Hunt is hopeful all will be available ahead of the trip to the midlands.

GARY HUNT’S THOUGHTS

“A trip to the current champions is always going to be a difficult one but we are looking forward to it. We want to play against the best players because this is the only way we can see and strive to becoming as good as them. We know this wont happen overnight but the gold standard measure is playing the top players and it is a great opportunity to improve week on week.

We took some positives from last week and I felt at 1 down we created a couple of really good chances to level the game but in the end we were disappointed to concede the second but its another great chance for the group to learn.

This will be our 8th game together as a team and 6 of those will have been on the road so we are still finding our feet and with each game we want to try and be better than we were in the previous one so as long as the girls come off the pitch knowing they gave their all then we have something we can build on.”

Tickets for Saturday’s game in Athlone will be available to buy at the gate on matchnight.
