On Sunday, our Waterford FC DS Futsal side made the journey to the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown to take part in the annual League of Ireland Cairdeas Cup tournament – the second year this competition has taken place.
Having been crowned Cairdeas Championship Cup winners 12 months ago, the Blues put on another show across their six games as they aimed to bring home the silverware once more this year.
After six hugely entertaining games, the Blues finished in joint second-position with Dundalk on 11 points, having won 3 games, drawing 2 and losing just one to eventual winners Finn Harps – courtesy of a last minute goal.
Gary Treen stood in goal for the Blues and kept an impressive three cleansheets, whilst Chris Walsh & Paul Corcoran maintained a strong defence for the Blues, conceding just four goals across the day. Zak O’Dwyer & Sean Toolin’s work rate in midfield was excellent, with John Flynn & Paul Eaton leading the line up front for Waterford, looking threatening at every stage infront of goal.
The squad were led by coaches Dylan Carroll, Sandra Myler & Amy Frisby, who have put in phenomenal work with the side in recent weeks preparing them for their tournament.
We would like to also give a special mention to all our supporters who made the journey up to Dublin for the competition, turning the National Indoor Arena into a sea of Blue with their flags and colours.
Waterford FC Head of Community Development Colin Power credited the work of the players & coaches in their work, and thanked all those who came out to support the players on the day:
“Another great day at the LOI Cairdeas Cup festival for Waterford FC. Having been promoted to the top tier after last season’s win, the lads were excellent and put in a huge amount of work. Our only defeat on the day was to Finn Harps by one goal, who went on to lift the trophy winning every game.
