Waterford FC can confirm that Olivia Shannon has departed the club having played her final game for the Blues on Saturday prior to her move to the US to begin her football scholarship in Tennessee.
The 19 year old attacking midfielder makes the move abroad, after spending the last two-and-a-half seasons with the Blues, having joined from Wexford FC.
Shannon will forever be remembered in the history of Waterford FC for becoming the first ever goalscorer of a Waterford FC Women’s first-team at League of Ireland level, scoring twice in our two-nil win away to Sligo Rovers in March 2025, guiding us to our first ever Women’s League of Ireland win.
Olivia made a total of 41 competitive senior appearance for the Blues across all competitions, netting four goals during her time with our first-team.
Shannon has become a huge fan favourite with the Blues, and a real leader in our dressing room, and will be hugely missed by all at the club – from players, fans & staff.
Speaking on her departure, Olivia spoke highly of her time with the Blues and her new challenge ahead:
“I am extremely grateful for my time as a Blue. Every training, match day and moment spent with this group, I’ll always cherish. The friendships and the memories created will stick with me forever. As with everything, there have been highs and lows, but through it all, this team has always had my back. Late nights, early mornings and homework in the car were undoubtedly worth it to be a part of this group. I’m so thankful to the club for making Waterford a second home.
My next journey takes me to the US, where I will be attending Carson-Newman University in Tennessee to study Communications and also continue playing football. The Eagles compete in NCAA DII in the SAC conference, and while it’s going to be a new challenge in a brand-new environment, I’m beyond excited to get started!

“It has been a pleasure to work with Olivia over the last two seasons. Her drive and ambition was clear to see from day-one and she moves now with our best wishes to a new chapter in the states.
Having a place in Waterford history as the scorer of our first ever goal is something she will always have but there is much more to her both on and off the pitch. Olivia has grown into a great person and footballer and this exciting step for her in education and sport is no doubt something she will thrive in.
