Waterford FC can confirm that Issy Walsh has departed the club having played her final game for the Blues last Saturday ahead of her move abroad to begin her third-level studies.
The 18 year-old versatile midfielder joined the Blues’ WU17 side in 2024 from her hometown club of Cushionstown AFC in Wexford, before progressing through the academy ranks at the Blues. At the end of 2024, she was recognised as our WU17’s Player of the Year for her impressive performances in the heart of the Blues midfield.
2025 was a breakout year for Walsh, being called up to our Women’s first-team before playing a key role for Gary Hunt’s side over the last 18 months. Issy netted her firsts senior goal for the club against Wexford last September, and has gone on to score a further three goals since.
Speaking on Issy’s departure, Blues Head Coach Gary Hunt has thanked Issy for her dedication, and wishes her well on her move to Poland, saying:
“Its bittersweet to see Issy depart to further her education but I am delighted to see her chase the career she wants and that says a lot about the character she has amongst the group. Since coming in mid-season last year she has shown great commitment and dedication to wanting to be better every time she trains or plays and her ball manipulation skills off both feet alongside her small stature make it so hard to get the ball from her.
There is a lot more to Issy than the footballer and her personality around the group shows why we are sad to see her go but every one of us wish her well in her new adventure. I am sure Issy will continue to follow the Blues from afar and who knows down the line, she may return in time but for now we thank her for her contribution to Waterford.”
Issy has also thanked the club and mentioned how important Waterford FC is to her, saying:
“I just wanted to let everyone know that I’ll be leaving Waterford FC as I’m moving to Poland to study dentistry. I’m so grateful for my time with the senior team. From day one, everyone was so welcoming and supportive, and I’ve genuinely loved being part of the team.
A massive thank you to all the coaches for the time, effort and commitment they put into the team. It’s clear how much work goes on behind the scenes, and I really appreciate everything they’ve done for us.
It’s not easy leaving, and I’ll miss Waterford so much — the team, the coaches and everyone at the club. I’ll always be very grateful for the memories and experiences I’ve had here.
