SSE Airtricity First Division
Athlone Town -v- Waterford FC
Friday, 10th March 2023
Kick-Off: 7:45pm
Referee: David Dunne
Waterford FC are on the road this weekend as the Blues take on Athlone Town on Friday night in the Athlone Town Stadium.
The Blues come into the game after a disappointing 1-0 defeat last weekend in the RSC against Galway United. A Vincent Borden goal after 22 minutes was all that separated the sides in a 1-0 defeat for the Blues. The Blues had started the season with four points after a win against Wexford FC before drawing with Longford Town.
The sides last meeting came on the final day of last season when the Blues ran out 4-2 winners in the RSC. Leading by three at half time, Athlone brought the deficit back to a single goal early in the second half but a Wassim Aouachria goal secured a win for Danny Searle’s side.
The Blues last trip to the Athlone Town Stadium gave the fans a goal fest in a 5-2 win for Waterford FC.
From The Dugout: Speaking ahead of Friday’s match against Athlone Town, head coach Danny Searle said:
“We’ve regrouped after the defeat last week and we’re raring to go. Everybody was disappointed with the result and the performance but we need to keep looking to the next game. There’s a long way to go in the league and the next game is the most important now.
“We need points and we’re going to Athlone determined. We have a very competitive squad and we’ve trained all week looking to Athlone. We’re not looking beyond that yet as a squad and can’t wait for kick off on Friday.”
Team News: Matthew Connor continues to miss out through injury.
